Ancient Greek Fashion and Food:
Fashion:
There was not much variety of clothes for the ancient Greeks. The clothes were large rectangular sheets of fabric arranged in a few different ways. Women wore Doric chiton (peplos). These are like simple and traditional dresses today. The Doric chiton is a rectangular piece of cloth that is twice the distance from elbow to elbow (outstretched arms) and a tiny bit taller than the wearer. The top was folded over. The piece of clothing was held together by two large pins at the shoulder. There were many different ways to wear the Doric chiton. Another piece of clothing women wore was called Ionic chiton. This again, was a large rectangular piece of cloth like the Doric chiton, but the Ionic chiton is a little wider and shorter. The top was closed with buttons. There was only space of the arms and head. This piece of clothing was tied with a girdle so the dress did not go below the wearers ankles. Women might add a ribbon scarf, earrings or necklace to their clothing. Men wore a shorter version of the Ionic chiton. It would come down to about the middle of their thighs. If the men were working they might remove their right clasp so the clothing would only be over their left shoulder. If the men were working outside and it was cold they would sometimes wear a cloak. Men would usually wear hats. If the men were travelling they might wear a petasos which is like a sombrero. The petasos was made with felt. If they were not travelling they would wear a pilos. A pilos was a smaller felt hat theat either did or did no have a brim. Soldiers would wear a short chiton. They would also wear armour. Their armour consisted of breastplates, greaves (protects legs), and a helmet. |
